With yet another increase in the number of visitors and around 600 exhibitors, the EPHJ-EPMT/SMT fair has beaten all records and looks all set for a promising future.

Lausanne, 27 May 2011 – As the doors close on the 2011 edition of the EPHJ-EPMT fair, the organisers are concluding an extremely positive note. «The number of exhibitors is up significantly at around 600», explains Olivier Saenger. «Likewise, attendance figures have also grown in 2011. It all goes to show the escalating success of our event over the last 10 years.»

And this success confirms the position of EPHJ-EPMT/SMT as the largest trade fair in Switzerland, embracing national and international expertise in the professional environment of fine watchmaking, microtechnologies and state-of-the-art medical technologies. The Pavilion allocated to Medtech has made it possible to gather together top-quality partners in order to showcase their know-how, and some very promising technological developments. The field looks all set to expand in upcoming editions. The number of daily Forums and Conferences were well attended by a large number of conference-goers drawn to the event by a full programme, the quality of the contributors and the pertinence of the topics addressed.

The next edition of EPHJ-EPMT/SMT will therefore take place at Palexpo Geneva, from 5th to 8th June 2012. Over half the exhibitors at the 2011 edition of the Fair have already promised to participate at Geneva in 2012 by renewing their contracts. Such is the case, in particular with the Jura and Franche-Comté regions, both of whom have confirmed their presence at their collective stands, representing together a large number of exhibitors. Statistics have thus risen to a record level never seen before at previous fairs. Yet more proof of the event’s strong reputation and the participants’ loyalty and adhesion to their very own EPHJ-EPMT/SMT fair! See you at Palexpo Geneva in 2012!

A unique model and a guaranteed success!

Today sees the kick- off the biggest trade fair in Switzerland, lasting until 27 May. This year, the fair celebrates a double anniversary beating all records for the number of exhibitors.

Lausanne, 24 May 2011 – Today is the opening at Beaulieu Lausanne of EPHJ- EPMT/SMT, the biggest trade event in Switzerland. The organisers may already congratulate themselves on the statistics and can start celebrating in style the 10th anniversary of EPHJ (Watchmaking-Jewellery) and the 5th edition of EPMT (Microtechnologies). Since its creation in 2002, the trade fair has continued to expand unabated. More than 11,000 visitors are expected to attend for a record number of nearly 600 exhibitors, including around 20% hailing from abroad.

The Trade fair still has the highly coveted distinction of being the only annual international event devoted to the high-precision field, embracing watchmaking, the entire microtechnology industry and, as of this year, the MedTech sector. Symbolising the dynamism this year is the MedTech Pavilion dedicated to Swiss Medical Technologies, which is putting in its first appearance, in partnership with such prestigious institutions as A3P, BioAlps, EPFL, Medical Cluster, Micronarc and other corporate organisations.

Among the increasing number of visitors are ever more CEOs and Production and Research and Development managers. These decision-makers, together with all the trade professionals from the sectors concerned, are now seeing the arrival of many others taking up the cause, thanks to the organisers’ open- minded policy towards educational establishments.

Seasoned or apprentice visitors will have the opportunity over 4 days to assess the expertise of all the trade professionals present, compare offerings, discuss freely with each of them and discover the advances and many new developments showcased by suppliers to entice their customers.

Among the spectacular new developments on show, visitors will be treated to a world premiere presentation by EPFL and Savoie University of a machine all set to revolutionise quality control, whose applications could spread well beyond the watchmaking sector.

As every year, EPMT/SMT is staging a host of free conferences as part of its scientific seminars with a view to broaching numerous topical issues, such as Biomedical Microtechnologies and Biocompatible Materials.

Lausanne Beaulieu, 24 – 27 May 2011. The go-to showcase for Swiss precision, the biggest Swiss trade event welcomes Swiss Medical Technologies for its first year and unveils its conference programme.

A pavilion totally dedicated to MedTech will be putting in an appearance for its first year as part of the EPMT, in other words Professional MicroTechnology Environment. The special place created for Swiss Medical Technologies boosts the programme for 2011. Conferences of high scientific value will be held on the fringes of a key event expected to attract nearly 600 exhibitors and more than 11,000 visitors. A series of cutting-edge debates led by high-flying institutions are on the agenda.

True to the scientific theme of these meetings, EPFL is organising its traditional Microtechnology Seminars on the afternoons of 24 and 25 May. The theme for 2011 is the application of microtechnologies in the development of new biomedical products. The programme consists of a series of contributions and presentations of industrial achievements in this field. A Poster Forum will be presenting various research projects conducted by EPFL laboratories.

A conference to be held under the aegis of A3P Suisse as part of its 12th forum, on the morning of Wednesday 25 May, will be dealing with purified wastewater and key partners in the medical, pharmaceutical, watchmaking and microtechnology sectors. It will be an ideal opportunity to update on the resources and features of high-tech purification.

On the afternoon of 26 May, the topic of bio-compatible materials will be jointly broached by Alliance and Micronarc. The conference will highlight the natural synergies between the microtechnology and medical technology sectors, the very reason behind this year’s first-time appearance of the MedTech Pavilion.

A dual theme will also be explored on 26 May by Swisslaser.net, in the morning at the MedTech Session and in the afternoon at the MicroTech session.

Aside from the seminar on visual inspection organised under the Interreg label by EPFL and Savoie University, with demonstrations of a revolutionary new system for quality control (see earlier world premiere press release), Stäubli SA will also be holding the Robomize Your Production forum on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, at 12.30 p.m.. The aim is to illustrate, in concrete terms, the alternative offered by today’s robotics industry, especially given the challenges set by a Swiss Made production industry increasingly looking for flexibility, while wishing to maintain its legendary reputation for quality.

Photo caption: The revolutionary machine currently lacks an aesthetic form and a name, but will be on demo at the EPHJ-EPMT fair from 24 to 27 May 2011

Visual perfection is one of the key attributes of any luxury item. To this day, visual inspection is a task that comes down to the keen eye of experts in beauty. Thus, in the world of high-end luxury and cosmetic beauty, there are as many definitions of beauty as there are subjective criteria for judgment, since every brand lays down its own standards that go towards establishing its own individual style. It is the expert’s task to determine whether a batch considered good, or merely acceptable, whether a satin-finish is deemed sufficiently shiny, or whether a Côtes de Genève motif is seen as a true reflection of the brand’s ethos? The answers to this quest for excellence will vary from one brand to the next and they are now delivered by experts whose eyes and powers of concentration are put to their sternest test.

The fallible nature of the human eye, depending on the time of day and cumulative tiredness, can cause inconsistencies in the systematic determination of minor anomalies, or varying degrees of severity in the appraisal of the “inspector”, the visiting specialist in charge of quality control. “Our apparatus is used to measure whether the expert always says the same thing”, explains Professor Jacques Jacot, manager of the project conducted within EPFL’s Microtechnology Production Laboratory (MPL), adding that the device can also be programmed according to subjective, personalisable criteria.

This strange machine comprises a small tower, atop which a camera sits, and finally a whole series of adjustable LEDs for lighting. Although it has yet to acquire its ultimate aesthetic form (Asyril and Qualimatest, the two parts manufacturers involved in the project will undoubtedly find the solution), this ultra-perfectionist visual inspection system looks to be full of promise, and not just for the watchmaking sector.
